Oahu, Hawaii

In June 2022, we had the amazing opportunity to travel to Oahu, Hawaii. This island was one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen.

One thing we learned when preparing for our trip is that Hawaii requires reef-safe sunscreens (why isn’t this a thing everywhere?). We bought sunscreen before we flew to Hawaii, but it’s not really necessary. While things like groceries are really expensive there, sunscreen is priced pretty comparably to the continental U.S. You can pick up reef-safe versions of all major brands of sunscreen (again, if companies make it, why isn’t it the standard?). If you do want to shop ahead, look for sunscreens that don’t contain Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. They’ll also have a reef-safe logo on the front of the bottle.

We drove around the island several times. The North Shore was probably our favorite area. Turtle Beach was great. Pearl Harbor was really interesting, we caught a luau, and we even got to go snorkeling with the sea turtles.

We also tried some amazing restaurants and food trucks while we were there that you have to try:

Guieb Cafe – Breakfast and Brunch (amazing pancakes)

Haleiwa Joe’s on the North Shore – perfect for date night

Waiahole Poi Factory – order the Sweet Lady of Waiahole and Tahitian Lady yummy ice cream treats (we didn’t try the food)

Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck – ALL the shrimp

If poke is your jam, almost all of the grocery stores care a huge variety that you can purchase by the pound (with rice).

Craving a sushi snack? Hawaii’s 7-11 convenience stores carry some fresh options that are super cheap and pretty tasty.
